As a teacher I think the most important thing to learn is how to read. Those who are unable to read are powerless and can be open to abuse of different kinds. Apparently simple things like reading signs when finding your way or understanding rent contracts, reading medical prescriptions or any important document present difficulties.
I think that being able to read brings a bit more dignity and self – confidence into lives which are challenging enough.
